Safety on the Roads This New Year: A Message for Terminal Managers

As we usher in the New Year, we want to reaffirm our commitment to safety on the roads. As managers, your leadership plays a role in promoting safe driving practices. Here are some Pro-Tips to share with your team:

  1. Emphasize Planning and Preparation: Encourage drivers to plan their routes in advance, taking into account potential weather conditions and traffic updates.

  2. Promote Adequate Rest: Remind drivers of the importance of being well-rested before their trips.

  3. Encourage Zero Tolerance for Distractions: Reinforce keeping distractions at bay. This includes putting away mobile devices, adjusting temperature controls and audio stations prior to your journey. Avoiding multitasking while driving when practical.

  4. Advocate for Sober Driving: Remind drivers to avoid alcohol and drugs, especially during holiday celebrations and that it is against FMCSRs to report for work under the influence. 49 CFR 392.5 states a minimum of four hours from consuming alcohol before reporting for duty, but that might not be enough based on many factors. Follow reasonable suspicion protocols.

  5. Promote Vehicle Maintenance: Remind drivers to undergo thorough inspections. Inspect components like brakes, tires, and lights.

  6. Reiterate Speed Limits: Reinforce adherence to speed limits and the need to adjust driving speed according to road and weather conditions. Be aware of construction zones where lanes may be shifting, uneven, or present other dangers.

  7. Highlight Seat Belt Usage: Remind drivers and passengers the importance of wearing seat belts.

  8. Foster a Culture of Courtesy and Defensive Driving: Promote respectful and defensive driving practices. Emphasize that courteous driving contributes to overall road safety.

  9. Lead by Example: Model the behaviors you expect from your drivers. Demonstrate a commitment to safety in every aspect of your work.

Thank you for your leadership and dedication to safety. Together, let's make this New Year a safe and successful one for everyone on the road.
